Mesothelioma Types

Mesothelioma – Mesothelioma is a malignant cancer that attacks the lining surrounding the lungs. Mesothelioma is extremely dangerous and usually results in death. The cancer is aggressive and can spread to the membrane lining of the lung, cavity of the chest, abdominal cavity and lining around major organs (heart, stomach, liver, testicles, etc.) It is called Pleural Mesothelioma when the cancer attacks the lining surrounding the lungs. Peritoneal Mesothelioma is the term when the cancer attacks the abdominal cavity.

Asbestosis– Asbestos exposure can also lead to the thickening of the lung lining (called the Pleura) within the chest cavity, which is called Asbestosis. This thickening causes the lung to stick to the chest cavity, making it difficult to breath. Symptoms of Asbestosis include: shortness of breath, chronic coughing, chest pain, shortness of breath, and a tight feeling in the chest. Oxygen may be prescribed to assist with breathing difficulties.

Epithelia Mesothelioma – When the cancer attacks the epithelia (or tissue membranes) that line the internal organs, it is referred to Epithelia Mesothelioma. This cancer can attack the liver, heart, reproductive organs or other major organs.

Pleural Effusion – When the thin membrane covering of the lungs (the Pleura), fills with fluid, it causes a painful adhesion between the pleura and the lung. This condition is commonly called Pleural Effusion or ‘water on the lung.”

Mesothelioma Lung Cancer – Mesothelioma can eventually spread cancer to the lower regional lobes of the lungs. When diagnosed with Mesothelioma, patients face an increased likelihood (seven times) of the cancer spreading to their lungs.
