Zocor Tied to Increased Risk of Rhabdomyolysis

Zocor (simvastatin) is a drug used in cholesterol management by inhibiting cholesterol production in the liver. Simvastatin was introduced in the United States in the 1980s and is marketed by the brand name Zocor by Merck & Company.

Patients who were prescribed the 80 mg. pill of Zocor have an increased risk of developing rhabdomyolysis, a deadly type of muscle disease. Rhabdomyolysis can also lead to severe kidney damage and failure, as well as death.

The symptoms of rhabdomyolysis include:

  • Weak, tender or aching muscles
  • Dark urine (or red or brown colored)
  • Fatigue
  • Unexplained weight gain
  • Joint pain
  • Seizures

In 2002, the Food and Drug Administration (FDA) issued a warning about the use of Simvastatin and its link to rhabdomyolysis.  Another FDA warning was issued in 2008 after additional victims were identified.
