Asbestos Cancer Mesothelioma

Mesothelioma InformationOnce microscopic asbestos fibers are disturbed and airborne, they can easily be inhaled into the lining of the lungs or absorbed into the abdominal cavity. Once internalized they began to attack the linings surrounding the lungs, heart or other major organs – although symptoms may appear 20 to 50 years later. Asbestos exposure is commonly associated with a number of life threatening diseases including Mesothelioma, lung cancer, or asbestosis. Although there is not yet a cure for Mesothelioma, its spread may be arrested with surgery, radiation or chemotherapy.

Pleural Mesothelioma – Mesothelioma occurs when asbestos fibers attack the pleural lining around the lungs. They can also attack the membranes and tissues surrounding the GI tract, stomach, pericardium of the heart, and other internal organs. Symptoms of Mesothelioma tumors in the lungs include coughing, hoarseness or wheezing when breathing, continual fatigue, bloody spit or phlegm, shortness of breath, chest pain, or fluid surrounding the lungs (pleural effusion).

Peritoneal Mesothelioma – Peritoneal Mesothelioma affects the abdominal cavity and the major organs of the body. Symptoms of Peritoneal Mesothelioma include swelling and pain in the abdomen, the discovery of a mass in the abdomen, bowel difficulties, unexplained weight loss, and fluid buildup in the abdomen. In some rare cases, Peritoneal Mesothelioma can be known to affect the membranes in the testicles.

Asbestosis – Asbestosis occurs when asbestos fibers become embedded in the bronchial passages of the lungs, which causes scarring or thickening. In some cases tumors develop in the bronchial passages. Asbestosis causes the lungs to lose elasticity, which makes breathing very difficult and may lead to death from respiratory failure. Asbestosis can also lead to the formation of lung cancer, especially when a person smokes. There is no know cure for Asbestosis, although oxygen can be used be relieve breathing difficulties. In some cases, a lung transplant is a possible option.

Mesothelioma Lung Cancer – Initial tumors caused by Mesothelioma can lead to lung cancer, especially in the lower lobes of the lungs. People exposed to asbestos increase their chances seven-fold of developing lung cancer. Mesothelioma lung cancer often affects younger segments of the population (when compared to the normal age groups associated with other forms of lung cancer.) Symptoms of Mesothelioma lung cancer include difficulty breathing, coughing, hoarseness or wheezing when breathing, continual fatigue, shortness of breath, and chest pain.

Other diseases – Asbestos exposure has also been linked to esophageal cancer and severe asthma.
