Meridia Background

Meridia® is the market name for sibutramine, a weight-loss drug first introduced in 1997 by Abbott Laboratores (Chicago, IL). During the next 13 years, thousands of patients took Miridia as part of an overall weight-loss program. The drug was intended to help patients lose or maintain weight.

Unfortunately, later studies showed that Meridia caused a significant increase in blood pressure and heart rate, which then led to a higher risk of heart attacks, strokes, heart failure, or even death.
