Was your heart attack caused by Avandia?

“I’ve been taking Avandia for two years to control my blood sugar levels.  In December, I suffered a heart attack. I’m 38 years old and have always had a good health.  Now I understand Avandia could have caused my heart attack. If this is right, please call me right away.”

FDA Warns Avandia Can Cause Heart Attacks

Avandia Side EffectsIn 2006, Avandia was the most popular diabetes drug in the United States, with sales of $3.2 billion.  Approximately 600,000 Americans are actively taking the drug today. Unbeknownst to them, Avandia’s manufacturer was exposing them to a possible heart attack, stroke and heart failure.  It is estimated that 47,000 people suffered some type of cardiovascular event from 1999 to 2009 while taking Avandia.

In response to studies that linked Avandia to heart attacks and strokes, the Food and Drug Administration issued a safety alert to doctors in 2008.  Because of high number of heart attack and stroke victims, Avandia sales plunged, although it still remains on the market.

Avandia is manufactured by GlaxoSmithKline, who is suspected of covering up data about the link between the drug and heart issues. In 2010, a Senate Finance Committee press release revealed that GlaxoSmithKline had “attempted to downplay scientific findings about the safety of Avandia as far back as 2000.”

If you are currently taking Avandia, you should consult with your doctor as soon as possible.

Diabetes and Avandia

Diabetes is a serious and possibly life-threatening disease that affects some 20 million Americans. Diabetes can lead to coronary heart disease, kidney failure, blindness, and even amputation of hands, feet, arms and legs.

In 1999, Avandia (generic name rosiglitazone) was approved to treat type 2 diabetes to help control blood sugar levels.  Avandia is taken orally as a stand-alone medication. It may also be taken with Avandamet (metformin) or with Avandaryl (glimepiride).

Since then, the Food and Drug Administration (FDA) and other industry researchers have discovered a link between cardiovascular events and the taking of Avandia, such as congestive heart failure, heart attacks, strokes, fluid retention, and edema. In response to this new data, in 2006 the FDA called for GlaxoSmithKline (Avandia’s manufacturer) to strengthen the warning on its Avandia product labeling.  The latest labeling change in 2008 warned about a possible increase in heart attacks and chest pain with some Avandia users.

Studies Show Avandia Danger

A recent study conducted by the New England Journal of Medicine shows the increased danger Avandia has for diabetic patients.   This study takes data from 15,560 diabetic patients who took the drug and 12,283 diabetic patients who were given a placebo or other medications.  The study concluded that patients taking Avandia were 43 percent more likely to experience a heart attack.

An earlier study conducted over one year linked 158 heart attacks and 61 deaths to Avandia use. In addition, Avandia’s manufacturer, GlaxoSmithKline, recently supplied the Food and Drug Administration (FDA) with a pooled analysis of 42 random and controlled clinical tests where Avandia and a placefo (or other anti-diabetic medication) was given to diabetic patients.  The analysis revealed diabetic patients who use Avandia short-term (6 months) may have a 30 to 40 percent greater risk of heart attack and other cardiovascular event.

Avandia critic Steven Nissen, the chairman of cardiology at the Cleveland Clinic in Ohio, commented on these results: “Rosiglitazone appears to increase, rather than decrease, the most serious complication of diabetes, heart disease.” He said the FDA’s decision to issue a safety alert brought an end to “one of the worst drug safety tragedies in our lifetime.”

FDA Issues Safety Alert

In 2008, the U.S. Food and Drug Administration (FDA) issued a safety alert calling for revised product labels about the use of Avandia and links to heart attacks, strokes, heart failure and death. The FDA’s analyses of all available data are continuing today. FDA has pending questions about the best alternate option for Avandia users, including alternate treatment from other types of anti-diabetes drugs.

Specifically, the FDA’s restrictions on Avandia are:

  • Patients currently taking Avandia should be advised to transfer to another similar medication
  • GlaxoSmithKline is restricted from promoting the drug.
  • Doctors cannot prescribe Avandia without providing new patients with a detailed explanation on the risks involved.

Studies into the safety of Avandia continue. Steven Galson, M.D., M.P.H., director of FDA’s Center for Drug Evaluation and Research, says the “FDA remains committed to assuring that doctors and patients have the latest information available to make treatment and medication use decisions. In this case, FDA is carefully weighing several complex sources of data, some of which show conflicting results, related to the risk of heart attack and heart-related deaths in patients treated with Avandia. We will complete our analyses and make the results available as soon as possible. FDA will take the issue of cardiovascular risk associated with Avandia and other drugs in this class to an Advisory Committee as soon as one can be convened.”
