Long-term Use of Actos Increases Risk of Bladder Cancer

Actos attorneyIn June 2011, the Food and Drug Administration (FDA) issued a warning to type 2 diabetes patients of the drug Actos that they may be at risk of bladder cancer or urinary tract cancer if they have taken Actos for more than 12 months.  The risk is also further increased with higher dosages.  Currently, sales of Actos have been halted in France and Germany due to the risk of bladder cancer.  Independent studies have shown that male patients taking Actos for more than 12 months increase their risk of bladder cancer by up to 80 percent.

If you have taken Actos for more than 12 months, you should be checked by your doctor if you have any of the following symptoms of bladder or urinary tract cancer:

  • Sudden difficulty when urinating
  • Sharp pain when urinating
  • Unexplained appearance of blood in urine
